The first quarter of 2021 has seen significant activity in the social networking space on the iOS platform in Europe. Sensor Tower's data provides us with insights into how the top five social networking applications have performed during this period.
WhatsApp Messenger, published by WhatsApp Inc., saw its downloads start at 1.4M in the last week of December 2020 and fluctuate across the quarter, culminating at over 1M by the end of March 2021. Revenue trends also showed a positive trajectory, starting at approximately $684K in late December and reaching highs of $825K in early March. Weekly active users showed a slight decrease from 128M to 130M throughout the quarter.
Telegram Messenger, from publisher Telegram FZ-LLC, experienced a spike in downloads in the second week of January with 1.4M, followed by a gradual decline to around 526K by the end of March. The app's weekly active users increased from 31M to 37M, indicating a growing user base despite the decrease in new downloads.
Facebook, by Meta Platforms, Inc., showed consistency in its download numbers, which hovered around the 500K mark each week. The app's revenue saw a peak of $186K in the second week of February and ended the quarter with $168K. Active users remained relatively stable, with a slight increase from 111M to 112M.
Messenger, also by Meta Platforms, Inc., had download figures that started at 509K in the last week of December and ended the quarter with approximately 379K. The weekly active users for Messenger remained consistent, staying in the range of 55M to 56M throughout the quarter.
Lastly, Signal - Private Messenger by Signal Messenger, LLC saw a significant surge in downloads in the second week of January reaching 1.4M, which then followed a downward trend to around 105K by the end of March. The weekly active users for Signal showed remarkable growth from 1.2M to over 4.3M, indicating a strong increase in engagement despite the later decrease in downloads.
